One Happy Island, One New Chapter

One Happy Island, One New Chapter

The story of how one short trip can change the trajectory of your future

So it begins…

The turquoise water hit me with an emotional force I hadn't expected. I was solo, a rare thing for a mother of two, but as the plane tilted over Aruba, peering through the window my eyes filled with tears. Below me, the island was a shimmering jewel, a tiny strip of white sand against a turquoise that promised more than just a vacation. It felt like a homecoming I never knew I was owed.

My parents, my co-conspirators in this escape, met me at the airport. Their usual efficiency was temporarily derailed, in the gusty Aruban wind, the keys had been locked inside the rental car. As we waited for help, watching my mom calmly navigate the small crisis, I got my first real taste of the island's spirit, the locals were friendly, calm, and effortlessly helpful. It was my initial hint that this place was different.

Our first mission was the Lion Fish Shack. Patrick, the owner, only opens his tiny spot one day a week to serve up the invasive, yet delicious lion fish. He spends the other six days spearfishing to protect the coral reefs. Sitting there, eating simple, incredible fish and chips while Patrick shared his passion for conservation, I realized the trip wasn't going to be about sitting still. It was about doing.

Diving Deep into Adventure

The trip became a glorious whirlwind of exploration, fueled by daily stops at the Dutch grocery stores for delicious snacks to fuel our adventures.

My parents were determined to show me the entire island, and I was eager. We visited the dramatic Bushiribana Ruins, the monolithic Casibari Rock Formations, and the majestic California Lighthouse. We drove across the island to the indescribable blue shallows of Baby Beach, making sure to get there early before the crowds. We even stopped to feed the donkeys as we toured the less traveled areas near Bachelor Beach.

But the heart of my days was being in the water. From the first day, after dropping our bags we raced straight to Tres Trapi for a sunset snorkel. I was instantly in awe of the vibrant marine life. My personal favorite, however, was Arashi Beach, where the coral formations were extensive enough to surprise even my parents. Since I was young I felt a connection to marine life but this was my first true experience, if I was in the water I had my snorkel and the biggest smile on.

As a chef, the food experience was as crucial as the snorkeling. My goal was to eat at Eduardo's, a family of beach shacks, restaurant and a food truck every day. Their healthy, nourishing food, with the most beautiful smoothie bowls I've ever seen, was the perfect fueling snack, and yes I was successful! I even managed to bring some home. At Arashi Beach Shack we snacked on ceviche and funchi and enjoyed a bucket of local Balashi Magic Mango beer. For dinner, I treated my parents to a well researched hidden gem I found, we loved it so much we went a second time before heading home. I still dream about that meal and make sure anyone who visits Aruba gets a reservation.

We also enjoyed late-night tacos and ceviche from a restaurant at a gas station (a strange, but wonderful, travel tradition I've developed), celebrated my mom’s special day with tapas at Quinta del Carmen, and cooled off with treats from the Gelato Bus. Every meal was a reminder of Aruba’s rich cultural blend, I was beginning to realize I was running out of time to experience all the food, which just meant I would have to visit again.

The Turtle Moment

The singular, elusive goal of the trip was to swim with the sea turtles. Every morning, we'd head to the beach with our snorkel gear, hoping for a glimpse. Day after day, we swam with beautiful fish, but the turtles remained hidden.

On our last morning, my parents and I got up before the sun, determined to try one last time. Mom and I swam out nice and far. Then, my mom and I spotted it: a huge green sea turtle grazing on the sea grass. I literally cried into my mask. It was a perfect moment, no tour, just us, waiting for the majestic creature to surface for air.

As a crowd started to form, we quietly moved away, swimming further up the coast. I spotted a second one, and this time, we didn't tell Dad on shore, we just observed in peaceful, solitary wonder as it surfaced a couple of times. It felt like a personal farewell and I told her I would be back one day.

The Revelation

As we drove to the airport, our final stop at the Royal Aruba Aloe factory, I felt a deep, profound sense of fulfillment. It wasn't just the relaxation or the great food, it was the adventure, the warmth of the people, the conservation story of the lion fish, and the quiet magic of the turtles.

After getting in trouble once again for thanking my parents, we hopped on our flight back to reality. As I looked out the window at Hooiberg a simple truth settled over me. This journey, started alone, had shown me how much joy I found in discovering and sharing the world's beautiful, hidden corners. The tears I shed on arrival were replaced by a full heart and a burning sense of purpose.

I had left a small piece of myself in Aruba, and I promised her I’d return to share her magic with my family. Little did I know, I would soon be sharing her and countless other destinations with all of you. Aruba didn't just give me a vacation, it gave me a career. It inspired me to become a Travel Advisor, turning the joy of that one happy island into a path for others to find their own breathtaking moments.
